Miguel Vazquez: Ricky Burns fight isn’t complete for March 16th

vazquez43By Scott Gilfoid: IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) is saying his proposed unification bout against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) isn’t complete for next month on March 16th despite there being news about this fight taking place at the Wembley Arena in London, UK. Great, just what we need another fight that’s not going to happen.

Speaking with esnewsreporting.com, the talented 26-year-old Vazquez said “Nothing is complete. We’re waiting from the response from their promoter. If they can come to an agreement then probably there will be a fight between them.”

Oh, this is bad. It was assumed this fight was a done deal ages ago, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case according to Vazquez. What the heck happened? Shouldn’t it be a done deal by now? Well, if Burns’ promoter doesn’t get Vazquez for the fight then who exactly will Burns be fighting next month? It’s not going to be the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner that’s for sure.

Here are the options available for Burns to fight if they can’t get Vazquez:

Sergio Thompson
Paulus Moses
Jose Gonzalez
Alisher Rahimov
Kevin Mitchell
Luca Giabon
Liam Walsh
Antonio DeMarco

If they don’t get Vazquez for the fight then you would assume the card will just go on without him because it’s already got Nathan Cleverly facing Robin Krasniqi and George Groves facing Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye. Liam Walsh is already on the card, so Burns can simply face him if his team can’t iron out a fight against Vazquez.

This actually works out a lot better for Burns by him not facing Vazquez because the chances were high that he was going to lose badly to him anyway, so by facing him Burns can keep his World Boxing Organization lightweight strap and then start negotiations with Adrien Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions.

I don’t think that’s going to happen because Burns has already had two chances at the Broner apple and he’s failed to take the fight, so I don’t see anything changing there. But at least it’ll be good for Broner to find out sooner rather than later that he can’t get the Burns fight so that he can move on and take over the rest of the division while Burns fights whoever. Broner is going to be a huge star, and he doesn’t need to waste time with guys that aren’t ready to face him.
