Luke Gallear vs. Joel Ryan on March 1st
By Daniel Mole: Walsall’s Joel Ryan is taking inspiration from hometown boxing hero, Martin Gethin, ahead of his own title fight.
Gethin, Walsall’s favourite boxing son, was crowned British Lightweight Champion last month and the young protige is hoping for his own slice of glory when he competes for the Midlands Area Welterweight Title next month.
The 22 year-old takes on Derby’s Luke Gallear for the vacant title at Burton Town Hall on Friday, 1st March. Training out of the same gym as Gethin – Errol Johnson’s Wednesbury Boxing Academy – Ryan is hoping to emulate his stable-mate.
“I’d love to have the career Martin has had and one day win a British Title,” Ryan told www.uko-boxing.com. “He’s a great fighter and a really nice lad. He’s quiet and does his talking in the ring. That’s how I am.
“I know I’ve got a long way to go but my dream is to follow in Martin’s footsteps, starting with this Midland Area Title.”
Ryan (4-3) hasn’t fought since his narrow points defeat to Chris Higgs for the British Masters Title back in June 2012.
28 year-old Gallear (4-4-2) has been more active, fighting three times in 2012, but with mixed results. He beat Jason Nesbitt in April, drew with Matt Seawright in July but lost against debutant Tony Dixon in December.
The pair’s records suggest it has the makings of a real 50/50 fight but Ryan is confident of recording a much-needed victory to kick-start his pro career.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he added “I haven’t fought for a while and I need to get back out there. I’ve done plenty of sparring and am in good shape but I need to be fighting more regularly. My aim is to win this fight and be more active in 2013.
“Luke is a decent boxer and people tell me he’s a nice lad. We’ll both be going for it, so it’s going to be a good fight.”
Burton’s Tom Shaw (8-1) is chief support against an as-yet-unnamed opponent whilst Dudley’ Kyle Spencer (4-0) takes on Swadlincote’s Jimmy Price (0-0-1) and Tamworth’s Matt Seawright (3-69-4) meets Exeter’s Faheem Khan (4-0-1) in a re-match following Khan’s narrow points win back in November.
Tickets for the Errol Johnson-Promoted Show are priced at £30 unreserved seating and £50 Ringside. They are available from Burton Town Hall Box Office on 0128 350 8547.
