By Steven Ocallaghan: Next weekend we have the return of Adrien Broner who takes on the tough Welsh fighter Gavin Rees. It’s a good match-up for both fighters as both are quick and aggressive , but Broner has better defensive skills
Both are 5’7″ tall but Broner has a considerably longer reach that could make the difference. The thing I like about Rees though is that since dropping a weight he is starting to face guys his own size now.
Eddie Hearn made a comment as regards to Rees being able to take care of everybody Broner has already faced and to some extent I think he could have beaten most with the exceptions of Antonio Demarco And Jason Litzau.
Let’s not forget Rees is a previous title holder who lost to a very good fighter in Andriy Kotelnyk and for me Kotelnyk is a better fighter than anybody Broner has faced.
Broners toughest fight to date was against Daniel Ponce de Leon, where many had de Leon winning but I think the result was fair but it did show a side to Broner that can be got at.
Where I think the fight could be won is on who tires first. Rees does tend to gas near the end of fights but in fairness all his fights are wars and I suppose it’s understandable. Rees does have the advantage of going deep in fights over Broner , but by the same token Broner will be fresher.
I think it’s all down to the later rounds where I can see a stoppage coming, it could also be stopped on cuts because Rees does slice open quite easily.
The one thing in this fight I can guarantee is Rees won’t give Broner a second so there won’t be any of his ring trash. Rees is a worthy challenger but I think Broner takes it late then hopefully a unification bout versus the winner of Ricky Burns v Miguel Vasquez in the summer, when I think we will really find out how good Broner is. But don’t be too surprised if Gavin Rees manages to become a 2 time old champion
Broner hasn’t earned the right as of yet to be top of the division and for me number 1 is the battling Scot Ricky Burns.
