Gerry Cooney, Boxing Hall of Fame

CANASTOTA, NY – FEBRUARY 1, 2013 – The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced popular 1980s heavyweight Gerry Cooney will be among the many boxing stars participating in the Golf Tournament of Champions scheduled for Saturday, June 8th at Casolwood Golf Course in Canastota, NY.

The tournament is part of festivities planned for the 24th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, June 6-9th.

Tee time is scheduled for 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 8th. The golf tournament, which is $85 per person, features 18 holes of captain & crew golf (shotgun start), a chicken barbecue, meet and greet opportunities with celebrity guests and awards. Tickets are now available and moving quickly

From Huntington, NY, Cooney compiled a 55-2 amateur record before turning pro in 1977. The 6’6” Cooney utilized a devastating left hook to score wins over S.T. Gordon, Eddie Lopez, Dino Dennis, Jimmy Young, Ron Lyle and Hall of Famer Ken Norton to secure a 1982 heavyweight title bout with Larry Holmes (TKO by 13). He retired from the ring in 1990 with a 28-3 (24 KOs) record.

“The tournament has always been a popular event during Hall of Fame Induction Weekend,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “Gerry Cooney is a real fan favorite and it will surely be a memorable day for all on the golf course.”

In addition to the golf tournament, the June 6-9th Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will feature many exciting events including a banquet, parade, boxing autograph card show, cocktail party and the official Induction Ceremony honoring the Class of 2013.

Inductees include two-division champion Arturo “Thunder” Gatti (posthumous), five-time world champion Virgil “Quicksilver” Hill and two-time light flyweight champion Myung-Woo Yuh in the Modern category; “Let’s Get It On” referee Mills Lane, ring announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. and journalist Colin Hart. Posthumous inductees in the Old-Timer, Pioneer, Non-Participant and Observer categories will also be honored.

An impressive list of over 40 boxing greats from the United States and abroad are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
