Fury: People still think David Price will beat me

price5By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) is under the impression that boxing fans still believe that British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) would beat him if they were to fight despite Price having been stopped in the 2nd last Saturday night by Tony Thompson. It clearly bothers Fury what boxing fans think, and he says he’s going to prove them wrong.

Fury said ESPN “People love David Price, and if he had five losses, it wouldn’t really mean anything. He’s got the heart of the nation, all will still support him, and everyone will still believe that he can beat Tyson Fury and everybody else in his path. He’ll probably have to have two or three more fights and everyone will say it was a mistake, like he’s a better fighter, wow, he’ll still kill Tyson Fury.”

I think the difference between Thompson and Fury is that Thompson at least has some power to knock people out. You can see that with his high percentage of knockouts on his resume. With Fury, he just slaps guys and doesn’t have the KO power to keep Price off of him. That’s the sole reason why boxing fans will still largely see Price beating Fury if and when they face each other. It’s not because fans don’t like Fury, it’s because he can’t physically do what Thompson did because he doesn’t have the power.

Fury continued “You know what? Nothing’s going to change, but you know what? It’s up to me to keep going out there and beating world class fighters. Look what happened with his step up against Tony Thompson. [Kevin] Johnson was a dangerous man for 12 rounds. He wasn’t overweight and he came in for a proper fight, and he’s now 33-years-old in the prime of his life for a heavyweight. The difference in class between them [Johnson vs. Thompson] was phenomenal. I think David Price needs a professional trainer. The amateur style is not suiting him in the pro game. He’s a big amateur in the professional game. Tyson Fury is going to win the heavyweight championship of the world and unify the division. I’ve been saying it since I was 11-years-old, but look how close I am to doing it.”

I think Fury is going a little overboard here in building up Kevin Johnson. Let’s be honest here, Johnson was out of shape even though he wasn’t flabby. He didn’t fight hard for more than a few rounds, and then went into a hole, doing zero. Thompson is clearly a better fighter than Johnson offensively in my view.
