Burns-Vazquez fight still happening on March 16th

vaz1By Scott Gilfoid: Frank Warren Promotions is confirming that the unification bout between IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez and WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns is still good to go for March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, England. Things got a little confusing recently when Vazquez told esnewsreporting.com “Nothing is complete. We’re waiting from a response from their promoter.”

But it turns out has a letter of acceptance from Vazquez’s promoter as well as an e-mail from them that confirms the fight taking place on March 16th. As such, it looks good that the fight will be taking place as previously scheduled barring any unforeseen circumstances.

This is going to be a real nightmare for Burns because he’s never faced anyone nearly as talented as “The Puppet” Vazquez before. The best opponent that Burns has fought during his career was Michael Katsidis in November 2011, and Burns looked awful in that fight.

That was truly a life and death battle for Burns, as he ran, held, and punched the entire 12 rounds.

The holding and running was awful to look at from Burns, and I couldn’t give him more than 3 rounds because he stopping against the ropes and just covering up while Katsidis would nail him with massive amounts of shots. Picture the Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson fight where Khan was covering up against the ropes while Peterson worked him over.

That’s what Burns was forced to do against Katsidis, and it ended up being a really tough fight for Burns. Now Burns is facing a better fighter than Katsidis in Vazquez, and it’s going to be really tough for him to try and win this fight.

I can definitely see it either going to Vazquez or Burns getting it by a highly questionable decision. It’s a home fight for Burns, so you can expect him to get the decision it if goes the distance.

Hopefully we don’t see that happen because it would ruin any interest in a Burns vs. Adrien Broner fight because you can’t make that fight if Burns has the stink of a controversial decision following him around wherever he goes. Broner is the new darling of the boxing world, and he can’t taint himself by facing a guy that just won a controversial decision.
