Burns: Miguel Vazquez is a trickier fight than Adrien Broner

vazquez435By Scott Gilfoid: It was funny listening to some of WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ comments about his next opponent IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s), who Burns will be facing next month on March 16th at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London, United Kingdom.

Burns is very concerned about this fight because he could lose his World Boxing Organization strap if Vazquez schools him like he’s been doing against other opponents recently.

Burns said to Sky Sports “I believe Miguel Vazquez style-wise will be a trickier fight than Adrien Broner. He’s going to be the toughest fight of my career.”

So is Burns saying that Broner wouldn’t be the toughest fight of his career or that Vazquez is simply a tricky fighter? Believe me, Burns would have plenty to worry about if he ever faced Broner, but of course if he never agrees to face him then he can always talk like he’s doing now. Rees has had two chances to fight Broner and on both occasions he chose not to.

Burns says “People have been saying I’ve been avoiding Adrien Broner, but that’s not the case. The reason I didn’t take it was because I didn’t have time to prepare. If the date was moved, I would have no problem fighting Adrien Broner. Over in America, I’ve always wanted to do. I don’t mind to travel. A boxing ring is a boxing ring.”

Burns says he needed more time to train to fight Broner if they were going to battle in February, but Burns was already in training for a fight that fell through in December, so it’s not as if he was out of shape. When he chose not to fight on December 15th, Burns was in top shape and easily could have agreed to fight Broner two months later.

I mean, how do you get out of shape when you’re already in shape and only have to work out for two months? It’s just sad that Burns chose not to fight Broner again. Burns had the chance to fight Broner when Burns was the WBO super featherweight champion and Broner was his #1 mandatory. But instead of facing Broner, Burns vacated his title and moved up to lightweight.

I think Broner would run over Burns like a tank if the two were to fight. I guess there would be nothing tricky about it, so I can understand how Burns would say it wouldn’t be as tricky as his fight with Vazquez. Broner would simply blast Burns out in a straight forward fashion without tricks.
