USA Knockouts vs. Astana Arlans on January 31st

(SANTA ANA, CALIF.) – World Series of Boxing action is returning to Orange County as the USA Knockouts battle the Astana Arlans in a night full of international boxing competition on Thursday, January 31 at 7 p.m. in Santa Ana, Calif. The event will be the second home match for the USA Knockouts and the first of 2013 for the lone United States-based World Series of Boxing squad.

The Yost Theater, Orange County’s historic venue, will play host to the five-bout card on Thursday at 7 p.m. Each World Series of Boxing roster showcases a mixture of home nation and international talent and the USA Knockouts are no exception. Knockouts from three different countries will take the ring on Thursday with local talent being added for the opening domestic event of 2013.

2007 Pan American Games bronze medalist Braulio Avila of Mexico will compete in bantamweight action. He will face the Arlans’ Khabibulla Ismail-Akhunov in the opening bout of the night.

WSB veteran William Williams (Conyers, Ga.) will take on Israel’s Konstantin Snigour in the middleweight contest. Williams, a former National PAL Championships silver medalist, was a member of the Miami Gallos during the inaugural season of the global boxing league.

Knockouts heavyweight Istvan Bernath was initially a member of the Astana Arlans and he will face his former team in Thursday’s competition. The Hungarian boxer will take on two-time European Championships Roman Kapitonenko in the final bout of the night.

The 2013 debut of World Series of Boxing action is being co-promoted by Roy Englebrecht, and is the first of four upcoming WSB events on the west coast. Tickets for the full night of boxing action are only $25 and can be purchased at and

The WSB uses a 10-point must scoring system for all of its bouts, which are contested in five weight divisions: 119 lbs, 134 lbs, 161 lbs, 185 lbs and 201+ lbs. Rankings are compiled both as a team and individually for playoff action, which will take place from March-May. The first global boxing league, the World Series of Boxing is entering its third season of action. The first two seasons were broadcast in 29 countries to an audience of 58 million people worldwide.

The USA Knockouts will return to action on February 9 in a showdown with the German Eagles in Reno, Nev. The squad will be back in Orange County for a battle with the Ukraine Otamans on February 21 and will host the Dolce and Gabbana Italia Thunder in Reno on March 1.

Boxing fans in the North West are set for a mega-March after the announcement of VIP Promotions’ next three shows. On March 1, popular light-middleweight ‘Jimmy’ Kilrain Kelly will look to get to 6-0 when he headlines at his hometown’s Wythenshawe Forum. Joining Jimmy will be his great friend, debutant Kofi Yates, another Wythenshawe fighter, with the duo promising to pack the venue out with supporters. Southport cruiserweight Mike Stafford, coming off the back of a first round KO last time out, will also appear as he continues in his quest for a British title shot.

Blackpool’s 15-fight undefeated Jack Arnfield, who also notched an opening round stoppage in his last outing, will headline in his first title fight at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium on March 9, taking on Shepperton’s Gary Boulden. Appearing alongside Jack will be Middleton’s Warren ‘Rocky’ Tansey and Liverpool’s Ryan Farrag, who form part of a 14-bout card packed with local fighters.

Leeds’ Josh Warrington is set for a huge night on March 22 when he makes the first defence of his English featherweight crown against Jamie Speight in his home city’s Town Hall. Scarborough cruiserweight Danny Price and Hull’s Tommy ‘Boom Boom’ Coyle will also appear, on what will undoubtedly be a memorable evening for Yorkshire boxing. This show will also be televised by Loaded TV.

“2012 really was a great year for us,” stated promoter Steve Wood. “From our stable we produced European, British and English champions, and put on some fantastic cards.

“I’m really excited by these March shows. They make a great start to the season for VIP, because we have a lot of quality boxers and need to give them opportunities to become champions.

“At VIP we’re aiming to build on our success and go even further in 2013. The aim is to continue to produce exciting fighters, more champions, and give fans value for their money.”
