Steve Collins in training for Roy Jones Jr. bout

collins2By Scott Gilfoid: 48-year-old former two division world champion Steve Collins (36-3, 21 KO’s) is already in training for a possible bout against 44-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (56-8, 40 KO’s) for who knows when. It could be that Collins is training for nothing because the fight won’t happen unless someone puts up the money for it.

Collins told Sky Sports “We’re waiting for the best deal to come in that suits us both and we’re going to take it.”

The best deal? I’m just wondering who on earth would want to make an offer for a fight between the 48-year-old Collins and the 44-year-old Jones Jr? What boxing fans would want to come see this fight? It would have to be in the UK, preferably in Ireland, but Collins has been out of the sport for 15 years now.

How many boxing fans will remember him and want to come see him? That’s the big question. For whoever puts up the money for this fight they’ll be taking a big risk because it may not sell tickets, and if you put the fight on pay per view, I think it would be a disaster.

At the end of the day at least Collins will be able to get in good shape even if the fight doesn’t place. He’s training now and he’ll likely get in superb shape, so if no offers ever come for the fight, at least he has that going for him.

I can see maybe a promoter agreeing to put the Collins-Jones Jr. fight on an undercard for a UK staged fight card, but I don’t think that would bring the kind of money that would make it worthwhile for both Collins and Jones Jr. I don’t know what each of them are looking to make from this fight but I’m sure they won’t be happy if all they’re offered is chickenfeed. I think this is a pipe dream.
