quillin665By Eric Thomas: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) will be looking to put in a solid performance against #5 WBC, #14 WBO Fernando Guerrero (25-1, 19 KO’s) on the undercard of the Danny Garcia – Zab Judah fight on February 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Quillin, 29, won the WBO middleweight title in his last fight against WBO champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam last October by a 12 round decision. Quillin showed some positives in that fight in terms of his huge power as he was able to knock N’Dam down six times in the fight. Each time N’Dam would start making a comeback, Quillin would drop him. He had N’Dam down in the 4th, 6th and 12th rounds.

However, Quillin wasn’t consistent and showed some problems when getting hit with combinations. N’Dam was faster and was able to out-box Quillin with relative ease when he wasn’t getting knocked down. That’s something that you have to worry about if you’re a Quillin fan because if he was able to get out-boxed by N’Dam than you have to wonder how much longer before someone comes a long that Quillin can’t stop and can’t knock down. When that happens we may see Quillin taste defeat for the first time unless he improves.

Guerrero, 26, would have been a much more interesting opponent for Quillin if this fight had taken place before Guerrero’s loss to 40-year-old Grady Brewer in June 2011. That loss by Guerrero took a lot of the air out of his career. He’s still won his last four fights in beating Robert Kliewer, Jason Naugler, Jose Medina and Juan Carlos Candelo, but those were weak opponents and Guerrero still hasn’t really redeemed himself since the loss to Brewer.

Quillin is the perfect opponent for Guerrero to prove himself against, because it’s a situation where not much is expected from him due to his loss to Brewer and he’s got a big opportunity here to pull off an upset, get a good payday and then possibly set himself up for another big payday if he beats Quillin.

Also on the card will be middleweight Daniel Jacobs making his 3rd fight of his comeback from cancer against an opponent still to be determined. Light middleweight Dmitriy Salita will be facing Hector Camacho Jr. in a 10 round bout.
