Matthysse: I don’t need judges anymore; I hope Garcia doesn’t avoid me

16(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Allan Fox: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) decided after suffering two controversial losses in the United States to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander that he was no longer going to let the judges have any say so in his fights in the U.S, and so he’s turned the judges into meaningless spectators the last three times he’s fought in the U.S by knocking out all three of his opponents.

Last night, Matthysse stopped Mike Dallas Jr. (19-3-1, 8 KO’s) in the 1st round at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Matthysse flattened an overanxious Dallas Jr. with a solid right to the head that sent Dallas Jr. down face first on the canvas.

Referee Robert Byrd, for some reason, started a count on the unconscious Dallas Jr. until he realized that Dallas Jr was out cold and wasn’t going to be waking up in time to beat his count.

After the fight, Dallas Jr. complained, according to RingTV, “I never saw the shot coming.”

Dallas Jr. forgot to keep his guard up while throwing a couple of lazy jabs, and Matthysse fired a right hand that poleaxed Dallas Jr.

Matthysse said later “I’m not going to need the judges anymore. I’m going to try my best to knock guys out…I hope he [Danny Garcia] doesn’t avoid me.”

It’s not really Garcia that makes the fights for him. His promoters at Golden Boy Promotions decide whole Garcia will fight or not fight. He can definitely say no to the guys Golden Boy offers him, but it’s Golden Boy that’s picking out who he’ll fight. If they don’t want Garcia to fight Matthysse, then that fight isn’t going to happen.

Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy, mentioned this past week that he prefers that Matthysse fight welterweight Marcos Maidana next. That’s a fight that would obviously increase Matthysse’s popularity if he were to win it, but it wouldn’t be an easy fight because Maidana can punch and he’s already beaten Matthysse three previous times while the two were fighting as amateurs. A fight between them would likely be a catchweight fight with Matthysse fighting at 143 or so because Maidana has problems making 140 now, which is why he moved up to 147.
