Kell Brook & Devon Alexander: They are not the best but it’s going to be a good fight

alexander23By Rusty Nate: Kell Brook (29-0-0) travels to Detroit in February to make his attempt at the IBF World Title currently held by Devon Alexander (24-1-0).

There is a lot of opinion flying around about this fight. The majority of the American writers seem to be completely writing Brook off as a hype job who will fail miserably and disappear into the boxing twilight zone of the “never quite made it” fighters.

I don’t really understand this point of view, its not like he fighting an elite level world champion.

I am a Brook fan, I like the way he carries himself and I have always liked the confidence that comes from boxing out of the Sheffield Wincobank Gym (with the exception of Junior Witter, he took it too far for his skill level I think).

Brook is a good solid fighter, currently at fringe world class being that he is untested at the highest level but definitely has the potential to be amongst the best in the division if he keeps improving.

Devon Alexander is also a good solid fighter, good speed and movement, throws nice combinations and has a pretty good defense. He has certainly mixed it with the higher quality opponents in his 24 fight career compared to Brook but is that really any reason to play down Brooks chances?

My take on this is fight leaves me to believe that honestly it can’t be a 50/50. That’s just not possible considering the standard of opponents they have both faced, Brook has got to be the underdog and there is no surprise there. But I also don’t think this is going to be anywhere near the easy defense and straight forward win for Alexander that a lot of writers and pundits seem to be thinking it will be.

The Welterweight division is probably the best in the sport or at the very least on par with the Super Middleweights right now and Devon Alexander in my eye’s is way way down the current top crop pecking order. I am not hating on Devon, I like him as a fighter and i enjoy watching his fights, but when you consider the division houses Mayweather, Bradley, Marquez, Pacquiao, Guerrero, Berto, Ortiz and so forth, does Alexander Or Brook for that matter fit into that group? I don’t think so.

The fact is that Alexander is a good fighter at world level and he is a likable fighter as far as boxers go but between him and Malignaggi they are definitely at the weaker end of the fighters in this division when compared to the real elite level. Brook has the right opponent ahead of him!

Please don’t think that I am saying Brook is at elite level, I am certainly not. What I am saying is that Brook is at the same level as all the guys looking up at the Elite fighters in the division. He has every chance of beating Alexander and completing his dream of becoming a world champion. Unfortunately for Brook he also has every chance of losing to Alexander.

It’s a shame that these days a world title means very little really. Its all dollars and pesos these days and the titles usually chase fighters rather than the other way round.

It should be a great fight and I am looking forward to it either way. Give a great show guys!
