Hearn: Brook has to bully Alexander to win

brook1By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn believes he’s got all figured out how his inexperienced fighter Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) can beat IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) in their fight on February 23rd in Detroit, Michigan.

Hearn thinks that all Brook needs to do is rough Alexander up in the same way that the head-butting Timothy Bradley did in beating Alexander by a 10th round technical decision victory in January 2010. Nevermind the fact that the Alexander-Bradley fight was halted after Bradley collided heads with Alexander in the 10th, hurting him. Hearn still thinks this is the way to go for Brook to beat Alexander on February 23rd.

Hearn said to Sky Sports News “I think he has to hurt him…you wear him down and physically manhandle him…Look at the Bradley fight, that’s the blueprint to beating Alexander – just out-bully him.

The question here is how will Brook, a non-physical fighter with a history of stamina problems, go about changing his game completely to become a physical fighter? Is Brook going to lower his head like a little Billy goat and start charging Alexander from round one and tagging him with his head? Minus that, there’s nothing Brook will be able to do in terms of wrestling Alexander on the inside that will bother him.

If Alexander could handle the rough inside game from Marcos Maidana, who is a much, much more physical fighter than Brook will ever be, and then it’s safe to say Alexander won’t be bothered in the least by Brook’s attempts at roughing him up.

If Brook attempt’s to make it a physical fight then he’ll likely tire out like he did in his questionable win over Carson Jones last year when Brook gassed out by the 6th round or when Brook gassed out against Matthew Hatton by the 8th.

Hearn was quick to try and explain away Brook’s terrible performance against Carson Jones, saying Brook was only “30 percent of what he is now.”

No, the fact of the matter is, Hearn, your guy Brook got exposed in taking a step up in class after 8 years of soft competition. Jones put pressure on Brook and wore him down; it’s as simple as that. Brook has serious stamina problems, but at 25 this is going to likely be a career-long thing. If Brook is having stamina problems at 25, just imagine what it’s going to be like when he’s 30. Brook is pretty much a 6-8 round fighter at best. Alexander is going to expose that on February 23rd and give Brook a beating.
