Gennady Golovkin vs. Brian Vera = A good stay busy fight for Gennady

golovkin10By Dan Ambrose: After watching WBO NABO middleweight champion Brian Vera (22-6, 13 KO’s) slaughter the aging Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-2-1, 24 KO’s) in Verona, New York, I think the 31-year-old Vera would be a good opponent for one of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s stay busy fights later on this year. Vera wouldn’t have much of a chance of winning the fight because the skill and power difference between him and Golovkin would be way too far apart. Golovkin is a much better fighter than Vera.

Golovkin reportedly wants to get back in the ring by March or possibly April to keep busy so that he continue to improve and make a name for himself in the United States. A fight between Vera and Golovkin would be an interesting fight while it lasts.

Unfortunately, it won’t be happening anytime soon because Vera suffered a bad cut tonight over his left eye and that cut is likely going to keep him out of action for at least 4 to 6 months before it’s healed properly so that he can see action. It’s too bad because Vera would make for an interesting fight with Golovkin.

Unlike Gabriel Rosado, Vera wouldn’t run from Golovkin, and instead he’d stand and try to fight toe-to-toe. I can’t see Vera lasting long against Golovkin considering how much better Golovkin’s power and defensive skills are compared to Vera. But it would be an entertaining fight in the U.S since Vera wouldn’t pull a Rosado and put on the track shoes in the 1st and run for the hills.

You could count on Vera to try and match Golovkin shot for shot. Vera has been stopped a couple of times in his career when he’s tried that tactic in fights against Jaidon Codrington and James Kirkland. Golovkin would be even tougher than those guys because he hits harder, and he’s a lot better body puncher. Vera would be catching pure hell for as long as this fight lasts.

Golovkin obviously wants to take on much better fighters than Vera in 2013. He’s having no luck in trying to get champions Peter Quillin and Sergio Martinez to fight him. Golovkin’s best bet is to try and land a fight against IBF champion Daniel Geale if he gets past Anthony Mundine in their fight this month. Geale seems like the type that wouldn’t dodge a fight against Golovkin.
