wilder45By Scott Gilfoid: U.S boxing fans will have the opportunity to see the unbeaten heavyweight talent Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) in action this Saturday night against the capable Matt Greer (15-8, 13 KO’s) on January 19th at the La Nave Del Parque in Villa Hermosa, Mexico.

The Wilder-Greer fight, which is scheduled for 8 rounds, will be televised by Fox Deportes in the United States. That’s a channel a lot of Americans have on cable, so this is going to be real treat for U.S fans to see the 6’7” Wilder in action as he attempts to add his 27th consecutive knockout. Wilder is creeping in on the world record for consecutive knockouts of 44. That sounds like a doable record for Wilder if he can keep improving.

Wilder wants to fight for a world title in 2013, and that’s an ambitious goal. He needs to get the fights right now because beating guys like Greer and Kelvin Price aren’t the kinds of names that Wilder needs.

Right now it would be interesting to see Wilder face some of the fighters that Tyson Fury and David Price have been demolishing in quick fashion, but most of those guys from the UK, so it’s realistic to fly easy marks over for Wilder to obliterate in one round knockouts. Heck, Wilder can find the same fodder in the U.S without having to fly his opponents over to knock them out. But Wilder needs better opposition than the guys that he’s been fighting and the guys that Price and Fury and fighting. He needs quality.

Greer isn’t that bad of a fighter. I saw a couple of his fights the other night, and he’s got some respectable power. If you let the guy tag you in the head he can hurt you. Greer has been in with the likes of Denis Boytsov, James Toney, Kevin Johnson and Brian Minto. He’s been around and he’s learned some tricks along the way.
