Caribe Promotions: Rigondeaux will fight Donaire in March or anytime, even in China

rigondeaux02By Dan Ambrose: Caribe Promotions, the co-promoters for WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s), says that they are ready to match Rigondeaux against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire in March or whatever month that Donaire wants the fight. They’re not saying no to any month; they just want the fight with Donaire.

Caribe Promotions said on their twitter “Nonito talks a lot, and talks a lot about Rigondeaux. Rigondeux asks ‘when is Nonito ready to fight? Nonito, talk, talk, talk. Nonito vs. Rigondeux in March. Nonito didn’t confirm. And now he’s talking. Rigondeaux is ready. Nonito wants to fight in China. I confirm that Rigondeaux is ready, and we are ready for China.”

That sure sounds like they’re ready to match Rigondeaux with Donaire. The question now is whether Donaire himself or his promoter Bob Arum is willing to face Rigondeaux? Donaire has had plenty of chances in the past, but he instead has chosen older fighters that are past their prime like Toshiaki Nishioka and Jorge Arce. Donaire even said that he thought Nishioka was the best super bantamweight fighter in the entire division. It didn’t look like that.

Donaire choosing the 36-year-old Nishioka instead of Rigondeaux, and then saying how Nishioka is the best in the division, has given some boxing fans the impression that Donaire is dodging the fight with Rigondeaux.

From the way Caribe Promotions is talking it doesn’t seem like a problem for them to agree to any date or location that Donaire wants. From the sounds of they’re willing to fight him no matter what month he chooses or location. If they’re willing to travel to China to fight Donaire then that suggests that they’ll face anywhere. These guys really want the fight.

It’s going to look bad if Donaire chooses not to fight Rigondeaux next and instead faces one of his beatable contenders. Donaire wants to fight WBC super bantamweight champion Aber Mares, but that fight doesn’t look like it’s doable for the time being due to the fighters working for different promotional companies. With that fight not available, the next best fight for Donaire is Rigondeaux and I don’t understand why he wouldn’t take that fight if Rigondeaux is willing to fight anytime and anywhere he wants.
