Will Pacquiao soon end up like Roy Jones Jr?

pac92By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao’s loss to Juan Manuel Marquez might not mean anything if Pacquiao can bounce back from that defeat and continue winning like he had been from 2005 to 2011. Things didn’t go well for him in 2012 with him losing both of his fights and getting knocked out by Marquez.

However, if Pacquiao isn’t able to bounce back from this loss and if he continues to get knocked out by his opposition then we may be seeing him following in the same path as boxing great Roy Jones Jr., who has been stopped twice in his last five fights. Overall, Jones has suffered four bad knockouts in the last 8 years and he seems like he’s been on a steep decline since his 2nd round knockout loss to Antonio Tarver in May 2004.

Pacquiao hasn’t fought again since his knockout loss to Marquez but he’s going to be back in the ring next year, and likely against Marquez again because that’s the fight that he wants. It could be bad for Manny if he suffers another knockout because we really don’t know if Pacquiao’s head was somehow negatively affected in the loss to Marquez and we could be seeing the nasty effects of in next fight.

It would be really sad to see a great fighter like Pacquiao ending up as a fighter that spends the latter part of his boxing career getting knocked out by every guy he faces, but I think it’s a real possibility. I hope that he and his team know when it’s over because you don’t want to see Pacquiao still fighting at 35, and getting knocked out against guys that he would have easily handled earlier in his career. Marquez obviously isn’t one of those fighters because Pacquiao has always struggled against him.

I think it’ll really tarnish Pacquiao’s legacy if he sticks around too long and keeps getting knocked out in each fight.
