Saul Alvarez can’t afford a humiliating loss to Austin Trout

alvarez34By Dan Ambrose: We just saw WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) badly school Miguel Cotto on December 1st in beating him embarrassing fashion in front of Cotto’s own fans. WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) was supposed to fight the winner of the Cotto-Trout fight, but it looks like he may have had a change of heart after Trout came out the winner.

It’s looking more and more like Canelo won’t be fighting Trout, and he could end up fighting the loser of the fight, Cotto. That would be really sad for boxing because of the message that it would send to young fans of the sport. It would be a message along the lines of it doesn’t matter if you win; you’re not going to get the fight, the loser will.

I’m really hoping that Alvarez and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions will do the right thing and match him against Trout so that boxing fans can see who the better man is. I don’t think it’s going to happen and I imagine that Trout doesn’t either.

Trout calls Alvarez the “Golden Goose” for Golden Boy promotions, and I don’t think Golden Boy will want to see Alvarez suffer the same kind of humiliating loss to Trout that Cotto did. Golden Boy wants to turn Alvarez into a big pay per view attraction that boxing fans will pay big money to see fight after fight.

If Alvarez faces Trout, the chances are incredibly high that Alvarez is going to be exposed and beaten as bad as Cotto was, if not worse. That’ll make Alvarez look bad if he’s beaten badly by Trout, because who will want to pay to see Alvarez fight if he gets exposed by Trout? How can Golden Boy try and push a fight between a beaten Alvarez and Mayweather after Trout beats him? It would be Trout, who should be the one facing Mayweather, and it would ridiculous for Golden Boy to still be pushing for the Alvarez-Mayweather fight and yet I can still see that happening.

At the end of the day, I don’t think Golden Boy will put Alvarez in with Trout because there are just too many chances for something bad to go wrong with their would be star and I don’t think they’ll want to chance that. We already saw Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer saying that he’s still interested in making the Alvarez-Cotto fight despite Cotto’s loss, and Schaefer said that Trout hadn’t done enough to deserve the fight with Alvarez yet. That’s pretty incredible when you look all the older and smaller fighters that Alvarez has faced during his career, and it doesn’t make sense that Schaefer is saying that Trout is the one that needs more experience.
