Image: Roach: Pacquiao is going to shut Marquez and Beristain upBy Chris Williams: Freddie Roach thinks this is going to be the fight where his guy Manny Pacquiao will finally beat Juan Manuel Marquez by a knockout so that he it give Marquez and his trainer Nacho Beristain no ammo to complain afterwards.

Pacquiao hasn’t been close to knocking Marquez out yet, aside from his three knockdown performance in the first fight with Marquez in 2004. Marquez was never hurt in that fight even in getting knocked down three times in the opening round.

It was more of a case of him not ready for the speed that Pacquiao was hitting him with, and the shots just kept knocking him down due to force knocking him off balance.

Roach said “I think we can shut Nacho and Marquez up. We put him down four times. I think we can keep him down.”

Roach is pretty desperate to try and end his losing streak with his fighters because his top guys have been losing one after another during 2012. Amir Khan has lost twice and subsequently dumped Roach, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. just got beat, and Pacquiao himself just tasted defeat in his last fight after winning a HIGHLY controversial 12 round decision over Marquez last year in November in a fight that many boxing fans saw Pacquiao losing.

In a sign of how desperate Roach is to get a win for Pacquiao, he’s started offering him $1000 for each time he knocks down his less experienced, and less talented sparring partners. Thus far, Pacquiao has declined the money from Roach. I’m not sure if Roach understands that $1000 is nothing to Pacquiao. The guy has millions and Roach is offering him $1000? That’s like offering Pacquiao pennies for knockdowns. That’s such a poor motivational tool and I’m surprised Roach is even bothering with this, because it gives the impression that he’s seeing things clearly.

Not only is worthless in trying to get more out of Pacquiao, but it also puts him in the embarrassing position to where he has to say no to Roach on the rare occasions that he knocks one of his sparring partners down. Apparently, Pacquiao hasn’t been knocking too many of his sparring partners down, and judging by how Pacquiao was getting drilled in the recent sparring sessions during the Pacquiao-Marquez 24/7 episode 3 on HBO, I’d say that Pacquiao is likely not going to be getting too many more knockdowns.
