Image: Marquez shocks the world with a lucky punchBy Mark Calooke: This weekend the great Manny Pacquiao was beaten by his long time and long suffering rival, Juan Manuel Marquez. All it took was 6 rounds and the hopes and dreams of a entire nation were sprawled out just like Manny Pacquiao.

I was just happy to see a knock out. It didn’t matter who as long as it didn’t go the distance. But it was interesting to see the wrong man win. Interesting because the wrong man won their last fight as well. It seems there is no justice in boxing.

Once upon a time Pacman seemed unbeatable, and it seemed that way last night. A good punch caught Pacquiao off balance early and dropped the pound for pound king. Apart from that it was all going in favour of the eight weight world champion. Marquez touched the floor in the 6th which was reminiscent of their first fight. Towards the end of round 6 I had Pacquiao winning 5 and Marquez winning just 1. The punch that stopped Pacquiao seemed to lack power but the congressman walked into it. To be fair it was a very lucky punch.

Let’s face facts, Marquez will never be as good as Pacquiao. Without that punch Marquez was on his way out. In America the rule was that the bell couldn’t save anyone. Most places in the world don’t have that rule. If they fought in Europe Freddie Roach would have been permitted to go and carry Pacquiao back to his corner. The bell sounded as he hit the floor. I’m glad that rule was in place, it means we were gifted with a brutal knockout. I don’t want anyone to get hurt but I always hate to rely on judges.

One thing that has confused me is talk of steroid use. I have been shocked at the amount of people convinced, even Mayweather fans. I agree that Marquez gaining so much muscle will have some people talking. But those people don’t look at the bigger picture. Marquez has had a long career and never been caught. It’s a shame to accuse someone of cheating when they have worked so hard for their achievements. I believe Marquez was lucky but I will never see him as a cheat unless its proven or he admits it.
