Khan: Mayweather’s team is still interested in a fight between me and him

khan4532By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) thinks a fight between him and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still possible in the near future if he can keep winning fights. Khan says he’s spoken to his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather’s team and they’re both interested in making a Mayweather-Khan fight.

Khan said this as quoted by BBC “Definitely, it’s still on the cards. I remember just recently I was speaking to his [Mayweather] team and Golden Boy promotions and they are still interested in that fight.”

For a Khan-Mayweather fight to take place a lot of different things will have to fall into place before it can happen. Khan would have to be able to beat his April opponent as well as WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, and then he’d have to hope that Mayweather beats his May 4th opponent next year, whoever that is. I doubt that Mayweather will want to fight Khan if Khan loses to Garcia or his April opponent, and I don’t see Mayweather picking Khan out if Mayweather loses in May.

The last person Khan should be talking about is a fight with Mayweather because there are too many things that can happen to prevent the Khan-Mayweather fight from taking place.
I’m thinking that by time the Mayweather vs. Khan fight does take place, Mayweather’s skills will be badly eroded. I mean, Mayweather didn’t look good at all against Miguel Cotto earlier this year in May, and by the time Mayweather fights again next May, he’ll have been out of the ring for an entire year.

I don’t think that’s going to improve his skills any. Mayweather Jr. turns 36 in February, and I don’t think he’s going to be able to fight for too much longer without taking losses against some of the better fighters. Mayweather Jr. will likely be fighting Robert Guerrero on May 4th, and that could be a really tough fight for him. Guerrero throws a lot of punches and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was to beat Mayweather.

WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi and Josesito Lopez are two possibilities for Khan’s next fight in April. Khan would have to move up to welterweight to fight Malignaggi, but it won’t be a big deal because he already easily beat the light hitting Malignaggi in 2010. Khan has been saying he’ll be fighting for a world title in April, so it looks like Malignaggi will be the guy he ends up fighting because all the current light welterweight champions won’t be available to fight Khan in April. Malignaggi is considered a paper champion by a lot of boxing fans. Many of them see Malignaggi as the weakest of the 147 pound champions, so Khan wouldn’t be risking much to face him.
