Hennessy: Price isn’t going to get a 50-50 deal with Tyson Fury

By William Mackay: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price’s promoter Frank Maloney just finished offering a more than fair offer of £650,000 to unbeaten Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) for a big Price-Fury fight that could take place next year. The offer was rejected by Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy, as he’s looking for bigger money than that.

Hennessy said to the Dailystar.co.uk “Without Tyson there’s no story with David Price. If the fight is to happen, Price needs to accept it will not be 50-50 because Tyson has a much higher ranking and profile.”

Hennessy sees a Fury-Price fight as a stadium fight and he thinks the £650,000 is much too low for that kind of fight.

I think Hennessy doesn’t want to put Fury in with Price right now because Fury’s sitting in a prime position as the WBC heavyweight mandatory challenger now after beating Kevin Johnson by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night.

Fury’s either going to get a fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and a big payday that comes with that fight or Fury will be in the position to fight for the vacant World Boxing Council heavyweight title if Vitali decides that he’d rather retire right now than defend his belt again. If Vitali retires, Fury would be facing either Bermane Stiverne or Chris Arreola. Those are tough opponents, but still an easier option than fighting the 6’7″ Price.

The WBC doesn’t really have a lot of good heavyweights ranked in their top 15, so if Fury could get his hands on the title somehow he’d have to worry about guys like Denis Boytsov, Seth Mitchell, Arreola, Stiverne, Johnathon Banks, Kubrat Pulev, Magomed Abdusalamov and Odlnaier Solis.

Maloney should focus on just keeping Price busy rather than trying to get a fight that doesn’t appear to be there for Price right now. It might happen later once Fury gets beaten or if Fury beats him to the WBC title. In that case, I think Price might have to become the mandatory challenger before he gets a shot against Fury.
