golovkin45By Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) can’t get it any better than this. He’s being matched up against a junior middleweight with a brawling style in Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) on January 19th at the Madison Square Garden, in New York.

The best part of all is that HBO has agreed to televise the fight, so Golovkin gets a soft touch and HBO will show the fight anyway.

This fight will give Golovkin, 5’10”, a great opportunity for him to showcase his power punching because he won’t have to chase Rosado around the ring like he would against some of the other middleweights. Rosado, 26, will make it easy for him by coming straight to him to slug it out.

There are obviously much better fighters in the middleweight division that Golovkin could have fought, but the choices immediately came down to either Rosado, who like I said is a light middleweight, and fringe contender Fernando Guerrero. Both Guerrero and Rosado are nothing special, but of the two Rosado was less tainted fighter because Guerrero had recently been knocked out by 40-year-old Grady Brewer.

Golovkin has knocked out his last 11 opponents and dates back an incredible four years. It’s to imagine a fighter having knocked every guy he’s faced for the past four years, and that shows you the kind of power that Golovkin has. He stopped Grzegorz Proksa in the 5th round last September in an impressive win. That might have been Golovkin’s best opponent, and he easily chopped him down in knocking him to the canvas on three separate occasions.

Rosado has knocked out five out of his last six opponents, so he’s got power too, but obviously not the same kind of power that Golovkin has going for him. Rosado thinks he can knock Golovkin out, and he feels he’s the more experienced fighter of the two. It remains to be seen whether Rosado will be able to do much Golovkin. I suspect he’ll get knocked out by Golovkin.
