Garcia-Judah: Is this Zab’s last chance?

judah34345By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has given 35-year-old Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) an arguably undeserved chance to fight WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) on February 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Judah was knocked out last year by Amir Khan, and now he’s getting a title shot after winning one fight against Vernon Paris. If Judah gets knocked out in this fight, and it does appear that he will, you would have to conclude that Judah may have gotten his last chance at a title unless he follows the Evander Holyfield course of fighting 2nd and 3rd tier opposition and still getting title shots over and over.

You want to see Golden Boy Promotions matching their fighters up against the best guys in the division. You hear Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya talking about how they want to change the sport by making the biggest fights, but then you see Garcia being matched against a faded recently knocked out Judah.

You also see how Golden Boy fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez is getting matched up against light welterweights and welterweights instead of fighters from the junior middleweight division. Seeing that kind of thing leaves you with only impression and that’s Golden Boy isn’t much different from Top Rank in the kinds of fights they set up for their fighters.

Judah is well past his prime and his loss to Khan last year in July showed that. Judah should have two losses in his last four fights going into his fight with Garcia because he was given a real gift in his victory over Lucas Matthysse in November 2010. Judah lost that fight on my scorcard, and even if you wanted to ignore a lot of the good work that Matthysse did in each round, you still had to give him the win.

I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing more of Judah after Garcia knocks him out on February 9th. I don’t know who Golden Boy will put him in with, but I can see him being trotted out over and over again just so that they have a fighter with a name to face one of their guys.
