mayweather45By Chris Williams: Well, it looks like WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) will be facing WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) on May 4th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Boxingtalk.com.

Canelo could end up on the undercard as the co-main event in this pay per view broadcast on HBO. It’s possible that the winner of the Mayweather-Guerrero and Alvarez-TBA fights will face each other in September when Mayweather is scheduled to be back in the ring again.

I never thought for a second that Mayweather would choose Alvarez because it’s still too early for that fight. Alvarez is well known among hardcore boxing fans in the United States, but casual boxing fans still know little of him because he’s only been having his fights televised in the U.S for a short period of time, and they’ve always been undercard fights rather than main event.

Alvarez is really a fighter that is still two to three years away from being a huge draw in the U.S, but obviously the soon to be 36-year-old Mayweather can’t afford to wait that long to wait that long to fight him. He has to do it soon before he gets much older.

Guerrero is going to be a tough gest for Mayweather because he’s a highly motivated fighter, and he doesn’t really know what it’s like to lose because his it’s been seven long years since Guerrero lost his only fight of his career to Gamaliel Diaz by a 12 round decision. Guerrero was beaten by Orlando Salido in November 2006, but that fight result was overturned and changed to a no contest after Saldo tested positive for a banned substance after the fight.

Guerrero is going to be throwing a lot of punches, because he knows that’s the kind of style that Mayweather has problems with. We just saw Guerrero easily beat Andre Berto, who was using the Mayweather shoulder roll defense last November.

Guerrero just overwhelmed Berto with punches and nailed him with a lot of lead left hands while Berto was leaning to the right with his shoulder roll fighting stance. Berto never made any adjustments with his defense and ended up taking a real beating. Guerrero showed that he’s not afraid to fight dirty because he was doing some holding and hitting, as well as throwing rabbit punches.
