By Jim Dower: #15 IBF heavyweight contender Alexander Dimitrenko (33-2, 21 KO’s) defeated Samir Kurtagic (11-5, 8 KO’s) by an 8 round decision on Friday night at the Sluneta, Usti nad Ladem, Czech Republic. This was supposed to have been an easy fight for the 6’7” Dimitrenko, but shockingly he was dropped by Kurtagic and had to battle hard to win tonight. Dimitrenko was just too easy to hit and didn’t look impressive.

It’s going to be tough for Dimitrenko to work himself into a title shot position because he doesn’t look good, and the heavyweight division is improving to where a fighter like Dimitrenko really doesn’t have a place anymore unless improves with it.

Dimitrenko, who at one time was highly ranked by all of the four sanctioning bodies, is now only ranked in the top 15 by one of them and is barely holding on at #15 by the IBF. In his last fight before this one, Dimtrenko was stopped by Kubrat Pulev in the 11th round last May. That was a big blow to Dimitrenko’s career because it was only the second time that he’d stepped up to face a quality opponent and he was beaten up and stopped. The previous time he fought someone good was against Eddie Chambers in 2009, and he lost that fight by a 12 round decision.

Also on Friday night’s card, lightweight Martin Parlaqi (8-0, 4 KO’s) defeated Michal Dufek (9-3-1, 6 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision.
