DeGale to try and use movement against Zuniga

Image: DeGale to try and use movement against ZunigaBy Scott Gilfoid: James DeGale (13-1, 9 KO’s) will be attempting to be a more mobile fighter this Saturday night when he faces Fulgencio Zuniga (25-6-1, 22 KO’s) at the Bonus Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. DeGale and Zuniga will be scrapping for the vacant WBC Silver super middleweight strap, and it’s really a toss up for which fighter comes out on top in this one.

I would say DeGale, but he’s already been exposed in past fights and he doesn’t have the power or the mobility to walk though a guy like Zuniga. This guy can punch and he only loses to fighters that are mobile or blessed with major power like Kelly Pavlik, Thomas Oosthuizen or Lucian Bute. Those guys are in a different league than DeGale.

DeGale said to Fightnews.com “I’ve got to use my feet a lot more than I did in my last fight [against Hadillah Mohoumadi]. I was on the ropes for far too long.”

Good luck, DeGale, you’re going to need it. DeGale doesn’t have the kind of legs that enable to move. He seems only capable of shuffling, and I think he’ll be making a big mistake if he attempts to be more mobile in this fight against Zuniga because he’ll only end up more tired and drained than he usually is. DeGale’s stamina has never been good, but if you ask him to move around the ring like Andre Dirrell, then it’s going to end badly for DeGale because he just wasn’t made to move. DeGale is a plodder out of necessity rather than by choice. He is what he is.

DeGale looked something awful in his last fight against Hadillah Mohoumadi. DeGale won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision but it looked like he barely beat Mohoumadi and the judges gave DeGale a decision by the wide scores of 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112. The funny thing about this fight was that DeGale was already gassed out by the 3rd round.

It was as if he was still fighting in the amateur ranks and was at the limit where the fight was supposed to end. DeGale spent the next 8 rounds leaning with his back against the ropes like an older fighter that can no longer move around the ring like he once could. This is why it’s so funny that DeGale is talking about being more mobile against Zuniga. It’s not going to happen because DeGale doesn’t have the stamina or the foot speed to be able to back up his talk.
