cunningham3423By Dan Ambrose: Steve Cunningham is pretty upset after losing a controversial 12 round split decision tonight against a popular Tomasz Adamek in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Cunningham out-landed Adamek by a huge 220 to 169 margin, according to RingTV, but that wasn’t good enough for two of the judges, who scored the decision to Adamek by the scores of 116-112 and 115-112, while the third judge had it 115-113 for Cunningham.

I thought Cunningham did more than enough to win the fight, as he landed the harder shots and was able to keep away Adamek to avoid a lot of his return fire.

Cunningham said this after the fight as quoted by RingTV “It saddens me…I’m not Bernard Hopkins. I need these wins. I can’t be getting cheated like this. It’s sad, man, it’s sad. It’s nonsense. What needs to be done is boxing for this not to happen again? This isn’t a game.”

There isn’t much Cunningham can do. That’s boxing. It’s sad when judges watch a completely different fight from what the boxing masses see, because this was a clear win for Cunningham.

Hopefully, they can have the International Boxing Federation look into the fight and review it themselves so they can order a rematch between them, because this is one fight where there absolutely should be rematch. I don’t think the IBF will overturn the decision, but they at least can make sure that Cunningham gets another shot against Adamek with a different set of judges working the fight so that there aren’t any complaints from boxing fans.

Cunningham did a good job of moving, and connecting with hard jabs against the plodding Adamek. It was pure boxing at it’s finest, and I don’t see how two of the judges couldn’t see that Cunningham dominated the action. Adamek landed more power shots, but Cunningham’s power shots were landing with more authority and were snapping Adamek’s head from side to side each time they landed.
