Cotto looked smaller than he had been for his last two fights, and was missing his big power.

Trout looked to be at least 15 pounds heavier than Cotto, and his extra height and reach made it nearly impossible for Cotto to land with any consistency. The judges gave Trout the victory by the scores of 117-111, 117-111, 119-109. Some boxing fans thought those scores were too wide, in particular the 119-109 score, which gave Cotto very little credit for some of the rounds where he did some good work.

Trout was the better fighter tonight, and he showed it by pulling away from the 32-year-old Cotto in the 2nd half. The fight stopped being close round the 7th round on, as Trout totally dominated the action with his pressure, combinations and powerful jab.

Cotto moved along the edges of the ring looking as if he was just trying to survive rather than win. I thought Cotto looked tired and it was kind of surprising it was only the 7th round. From then on, Cotto’s attempts at initiating offense were feeble and met with poor success. The crowd cheered no matter Cotto did, but they didn’t have many moments because Cotto rarely landed.

In a one-sided mismatch, #10 WBC Jayson Velez (20-0, 15 KO’s) destroyed an over-matched and timid looking Salvador Sanchez II (30-5-3, 18 KO’s) after knocking Sanchez II down twice in the fight. Velez put Sanchez II down with a flurry of shots near the end of the 2nd round. Sanchez II stayed down until the count of 8 and didn’t look good after he got back up. In the next round, Velez dropped Sanchez II again early in the round. After he got up, Sanchez II was hit with a flurry of shots. The referee Harvey Dock then stepped in and stopped the fight at 0:28 of the round.

Middleweight Daniel Jacobs (24-1, 21 KO’s) got an impressive 5th round stoppage victory tonight over an over-matched Chris Fitzpatrick (15-3, 6 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout. Jacobs, 25, was fighting for only the second time in the past year due to a cancer scare. Jacobs started off flow in the first three rounds. However, in the 4th and especially in the 5th, Jacobs really pounded Fitzpatrick with power shots. The referee looked like he was on the verge of stopping the fight in the 5th when Jacobs unloaded on Fitzpatrick with a sustained flurry of shots while he was trapped along the ropes. In between the 5th and 6th rounds, Fitzpatrick decided he’d had enough and the fight was stopped.
