Burns Fight Off!

Image: Burns Fight Off!By Adam Mccoy: What a nightmare few months it’s been for Ricky Burns (35-2 10Ko). He delivered a dominating performance in his last fight with a TKO win over Kevin Mitchell to retain the WBO Lightweight Title. Ricky then set to defend his title against the unbeaten Liam Walsh (12-0 9Ko) suffered his first setback as Liam Walsh was unfortunately involved in a car accident ruling him out of the fight. He was replaced with Jose Ocampo at short notice and everything looked good to go only for Ocampo to pull out just days before the fight due to the unfortunate death of his trainer.

This is really not what Burns needed what so ever. Burns really needed a fight saturday and a punch perfect fight at that. Burns stock is tiny to that of Adrien Broner (25-0 21Ko) and i hate to say it but Burns needs Broner right now. Broner is getting huge publicity in the States and has a number of options to go for. Ricky seems to be picking guaranteed wins recently and it’s not nice to watch someone of Burns calibre do that. Broner has the power but Burns can hit hard and has lighting fast speed. This is a fight that has to happen for Burns as the majority of boxing fans already think Broner has this fight won. This is not the case what so ever, I would expect Burns to be way to fast and stop Broner in the later rounds.

Burns has done a sensible thing however and turned down the chance to fight on Saturday in an Exhibition fight instead he will most likely fight on January 26th. Burns needs to fight better opposition because although i see him beating Broner he will certainly get a initial shock at the difference in quality between Adrien and his previous opponents. Ricky will be receiving compensation from WBO for his title defense. Alex Morrison the trainer of Ricky had the following to say “These things happen in boxing, But to be waiting to find out if he is fighting just days before the fight is a joke. He’s been watching what he eats for two months and has had no social life at all.”

Its unfortunate the fights off but it was a lose lose to begin with Ricky would of won comfortably but still received criticism for the quality of opponent. He needs to have a rest from training come back and face a top ranked opponent. Then lets get Broner in there and see if Broner can walk the walk, As we all know he can certainly talk.
