Broner to Burns: I’m ready to fight you!

broner43By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) called out WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 Ko’s) tonight on BoxNation, saying he wants to fight him and daring him to get in the ring with him so that he can find out which is the better guy.

Broner said “I’m ready to fight you! You didn’t have an opponent for your next fight date, but you didn’t choose to fight me. I’m ready to fight you.”

Broner and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions were hoping that Burns would agree to fight him in February next year, but instead of agreeing to that fight Burns’ promoters is talking about having Burns back in the ring on January 26th in a title defense in Glasgow, Scotland instead of agreeing to take the much bigger fight with Broner.

This is pretty disappointing for Broner because he’d heard all the talk from Burns about how he was going to fight him next after this Saturday’s fight, which ended up not happening, but now it looks like Burns isn’t going to take the fight with Broner.

I honestly never expected Burns to accept a fight with Broner. Future events cast their shadows before, and Burns already had a chance to fight Broner last year and he instead moved up in weight to the lightweight division instead of taking that fight. I figured we’d get a repeat of history now that Burns is at lightweight and it sure is looking that’s exactly what’s going to happen.

I just wish Broner would forget about Burns and focus on guys that are easy to make a fight with like Yuriorkis Gamboa. The boxing public badly wants to see that fight, and I don’t know of too many people in the United States who are eager to see the little known Burns. Burns may be known in the UK, but in the U.S, only the hardcore boxing fans have a clue who Burns is. As such, it’s not even worth it for Broner to waste his time chasing someone down who isn’t jumping at the chance to fight him.

Burns doesn’t have the power or the hand speed to handle a talent like Broner. That would be a sickening fight, much worse than Broner’s recent mismatch against Antonio DeMarco. Broner would be teeing off all night long against Burns and probably prying off of him so he can throw his shots.
