This isn’t really much of a surprise because it’s been talked about for a while now Martinez taking a fight against the unbeaten #3 WBC Murray, but now it looks like it’s about to happen.

If Martinez can get past Murray, he will then possibly face former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a rematch on September 14th, provided that Chavez Jr. isn’t serving a suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for him having tested positive for marijuana for his loss to Martinez last September.

Martinez recently had successful surgery on his right knee to repair his torn ligament that he tore in his win over Chavez Jr. when Martinez was knocked down in the 12th round.

Murray looked good recently in defeating Jose Navarro in a 6th round TKO win last Saturday night to claim the interim World Boxing Association middleweight title. Not considered a puncher, Murray knocked the hard hitting Navarro down in the 1st and the 6th round to get the victory. Murray fought to a 12 round draw against former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm in December of last year in Germany. Boxing fans are mixed in their opinions of that fight with some feeling that Sturm did enough to deserve a win, while others seeing Murray as the winner.

Seth Mitchell vs. Johnathon Banks II?

Heavyweights Seth Mitchell (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) and Johnathon Banks (29-1-1, 19 KO’s) could be fighting a rematch in early 2013, according to Steve Kim. Banks destroyed Mitchell by a 2nd round TKO earlier this month on November 17th, but HBO reportedly is interested in seeing the fight put together again for some reason despite Banks blowing out Mitchell so easily. The fight was considered a WBC heavyweight semi-final eliminator bout, and it’s unclear why Banks isn’t looking to get a fight with the winner of the Tyson Fury vs. Kevin Johnson fight or the Chris Arrela vs. Bermane Stiverne fight, because that would seem like the better move for Banks.
