Robert Guerrero: I’m chomping at the bit to get at Andre Berto

Guerrero has got a lot of skills and a southpaw stance to go along with it.

Guerrero said “I’m just chomping at the bit…I can bring a bunch of different stuff in the ring.”

Guerrero has moved up in weight a couple of divisions and he’s not the same fighter he was at the lower weights. That’s not to say that Guerrero can’t develop into the fighter he was at featherweight and super featherweight, but he’s going to have to progress quickly if he’s to avoid a beat down against Berto on Saturday.

Guerrero was one of the best fighters at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight, but he was never considered to be the top guy in any of those divisions. Now he’s fighting one of the top guys at welterweight but without the power and speed to really compete against this guy. Guerrero did a good job of beating Selcuk Aydin in his last fight, but that guy is a much inferior fighter compared to Berto. That’s like comparing apples and oranges. Guerrero got a lot of confidence from that victory but can’t seem to comprehend that he was facing a guy with a pumped up record rather than one with quality victories.

There’s little question that Guerrero is one of the most confident fighters in all of boxing, if not the most confident. But you need more than just confidence to beat a guy that you’re really not built to beat in the first place. Guerrero can’t will himself to beat Berto by positive thinking. It takes more than just self belief to beat someone that you just weren’t physically made to beat. If Guerrero doesn’t have the body to defeat Berto on Saturday then he’s going to lose the fight and his confidence will be useless to him. Guerrero has the talent but he seems to be lacking in the speed and power needed to get the job done. This isn’t lost on Berto, who has mentioned it recently in analyzing what Guerrero is missing as a welterweight.

Being slow and weak are pretty big handicaps. You can be slow and powerful and still get by, but being slow and weak are going to really Guerrero in this fight. In his bout against Aydin, Guerrero looked not only slow and weak, but also poorly conditioned. He faded after the 8th round and was fighting on fumes for the last four rounds of the fight.
