Image: Molina will have to be perfect to beat KhanBy William Mackay: Undefeated 5’6″ lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) really has a tough task ahead of him on December 15th against the much bigger 5’10” former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-03, 18 KO’s) at the Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Besides the four inches in height that the 26-year-old Molina will be giving up to Khan, he’ll also be giving up five inches in reach. That’s almost a half a foot to along with Molina’s complete lack of power.

Molina showed some good hand speed in looking at some of his past fights, but he’s very shot and that could hurt him against the towering Khan. Molina looks like a super featherweight more so than an actual lightweight, and here he is being picked out by Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions to fight Khan on December 15th in the main event in a Showtime televised fight card.

This is Molina’s big chance to show his talent to American fans, but he’s been put in almost a no win situation to begin with. Molina hasn’t faced guys as large as Khan in his five year pro career, and he’s not faced anyone near the talent level either. He’s been selected from a spot where he hasn’t had the step up fights needed to get him ready for this bout. Of course that’s probably the whole point. Golden Boy had the opportunity to put Khan in with guys with more experience from his own weight class but instead they chose an inexperienced much smaller fighter without power from a division below Khans. As you can see they really want to make sure Khan doesn’t lose this fight because he’s already lost his last two bouts.

Molina is going to need to put a lot of pressure on Khan and focus on going after his head. Khan was just knocked out by Danny Garcia and he might be vulnerable right now if Molina can land a hard enough shot to get him out of there. Molina didn’t look very powerful in his last fight against Marcos Jimenez last June, so he’s going to have to load up more on his punches than he did in that fight.
