Is Adrien Broner that good?

Image: Is Adrien Broner that good?By Gerardo Granados: A friend of mine asked me if the newly crowned WBC lightweight champion is really that good or is it that Antonio DeMarco was simply tailor made for him to defeat? Adrien looked too dominant vs. De Marco; it was like seeing a professional prizefighter fighting against an amateur.

The quality of opposition that Adrien has faced isn´t too impressive, having defeated former WBO super bantam champion and current WBC featherweight belt holder Daniel Ponce de Leon; Antonio De Marco has a heart bigger than his chest but his overall boxing skills are not equitable to his heart, Jorge Linares dominated him until De Marco hurt him and finish him off. Antonio is a good fighter but his attack is quite predictable and his defense is average. Against Broner, Antonio was clueless on how to fix the puzzle that “Da problem” presented.

Adrien Broner better stop comparing himself with Floyd Mayweather Jr because until he defeats better fighters he will only be considered as a Floyd impersonator. It’s true they both share boxing similarities but if you hear them talk you can see how different both fighters really are.

At lightweight Adrien looked more powerful and his speed was as good as always, Broner has a natural ability to fight and maybe he´s one of the few that got blessed by god with special boxing skills. His defensive skills are great but he is also smart, has great footwork and the intelligence to counter with accuracy and timing.

He really has the tools to defeat any top lightweight or super featherweight top contender. His talent is vast and being only 23 years old his future looks bright and unlimited but will his promoter let him engage dangerous competition? Or will he be spoon fed by a greedy promoter?

At the light middleweight division there is a young organization champion who has a big natural talent but has not faced dangerous opposition yet, he´s spoon fed with weak light middleweights (only two), old welters and even has been mismatched against an average lightweight. It seems like the promoter does not trust the young lion and believes he cannot defeat dangerous contenders just yet, and it is a shame because the kid could do well against top competition and the boxing fans would like to see him step up in competition even if that meant a possible defeat.

A new lion king has arrived to the lightweight division, he is both arrogant and dangerous, and seems to be more talented than his fellow organization champions WBO Ricky Burns, IFB Miguel Vazquez , and IBO Emiliano Marsili; and perhaps is the hungriest of all. It would be great to see Broner face an experimented crafty fighter who also has speed and power so we could see if Adrien´s chin is as good as his overall boxing skills.

I told my friend that Broner is still young and there is no hurry to fed him against the very best just yet, but maybe he is already fit for the names like Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia or even Juan Manuel Marquez at light welter, I believe Cuban Richard Abril would be a good test for him at lightweight by the way. But for now he needs to fully conquer his new weight division before thinking on moving up one more time.

As for what my friend asked, I responded to him that you cannot show what you don’t have so Broner must be that good because you can´t deny him been a talented fighter. Do the readers believe Adrien Broner is that good?
