The Golden Boy President has vowed to help Cleverly the current World Boxing Organization (WBO) Light-Heavyweight champion secure big fights in 2013 against the like of Bernard Hopkins.

Cleverly will be defending his title against late replacement Shawn Hawk on Saturday night at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. The fight will be on the undercard of the Abner Mares – Anselmo Moreno headlined bill and is being promoted by Golden Boy.

When asked if he would like to promote Cleverly, De La Hoya said to the BBC Sport “Absolutely.” Adding “Nathan Cleverly is a guy anyone would want to promote. He has great potential and we feel this Saturday is crucial for his career here in America and I’m anxiously waiting to see what happens.”

Although Cleverly is currently being promoted by Frank Warren, De La Hoya believes there could be a way he promotes Cleverly in the US, while Frank Warren continues to promote him in the UK, saying that they usually work well with Warren. He added “Promoting Nathan is very doable and we would be honoured to partner up with Frank Warren and promote Cleverly here in the States.”

De La Hoya claimed that Hopkins who is De La Hoya’s business partner, may be willing to take on Cleverly in 2013, saying “We’d have to talk to Bernard be he always wants to fight the very best and has mentioned Cleverly in the past. So why not that fight? It is a matter of sitting down and talking.”

De La Hoya also urged Cleverly to link up with hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach on a more permanent basis, saying “It would be a tremendous move. There is only so far you can go with each trainer, I changed trainers eight times.” De La Hoya went on to add “There is a certain point where you stop learning and you have to move on. If his father is not taking him far enough then why not bring in somebody like Freddie where both fighter and father can learn and grow together.”

Cleverly has weighed-in today at 174.4 lbs and is expected to defend his WBO Light-Heavyweight title tomorrow night at approximately 1.00am BST.
