Image: DeMarco a good test for BronerBy Sean McDaniel: In less than two weeks time unbeaten former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) will be stepping up in weight to face his biggest test of his four-year pro career against WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-2-1, 21 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

This fight will tell us where the 23-year-old Broner is in the talent department and whether he’ll be able to make the same kind of mark at lightweight that he did at super featherweight. At his old weight Broner had a size advantage against most if not all of his opposition. In moving up in weight to the 135 lb division, Broner may not be able to crush his opposition by weight alone like he’d been doing at super featherweight.

Broner is now going to have to beat his opponents on speed, power, boxing skills and defensive ability. Demarco is the real as we’ve seen in his knockout wins over Jorge Linares, Miguel Roman, John Molina, Daniel Attah and Reyes Sanchez. DeMarco beats really good fighters and makes it look easy. Whether he can do the same thing with Broner remains to be seen.

The knock on DeMarco is that he can dish it out but he’s not so good in taking punishment in return. DeMarco was destroyed by Edwin Valero a couple of years ago, and he’s had problems previous to that against big punchers. Broner can definitely punch and he’s going to be looking to KO DeMarco as soon as he can in order to make a good impression on the boxing fans that will be watching the fight on HBO.

DeMarco can put himself in position for a unification match against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns if he can pull off an upset win over Broner. It won’t be easy but if anyone in lightweight division is capable of beating Broner it’s DeMarco.
