Image: Quillin vs. Golovkin: An excellent unification fightBy Dan Ambrose: Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) looked good in beating WBO middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night to claim the World Boxing Organization title. It’s now his and the question is what will Quillin do with the title. Given that there’s not a lot of exciting fights for him if he merely looks to defend the title against the top contenders the WBO has listed.

The best Quillin can hope for are fights against Martin Murray, Dmitriy Pirog, Marco Antonio Rubio, Jermain Taylor and Anthony Mundine. I don’t the interest from the boxing community would be fight for those fights. But what would be interesting is a unification bout between Quillin and WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s).

That would be exciting match-up because unlike N’Dam, a fighter that only had marginal power, Golovkin can actually punch. He can also fight well on the inside, and it would be interesting to see how Quillin does against him. It would be an exciting fight for as long as it lasts, and I could see one of these guys getting knocked out.

I have doubts that Quillin’s promoter would allow him to fight Golovkin, though, due to his huge one-punch power, his better skills and his far superior inside fighting ability. Golovkin would be a potential nightmare for Quillin if he took the fight in close where Quillin is vulnerable. N’Dam didn’t seem to understand that the only place where he had a fighting chance at winning was in close. Towards the end of the fight, N’Dam did crowd Quillin a bit but not enough and his chin wasn’t good enough to take Quillin’s power even there. However, he had much less worries when he was in close and he did a good a job for the most part during the brief moments he took the fight to the inside.

Golovkin vs. Quillin would big fight for both guys because neither of them have a real name in the middleweight division, and both need an important victory to get them on the map. Quillin’s fight against N’Dam definitely helped his career, but he needs another fight like that to get him to the next level, and Golovkin would be perfect for him.
