Image: Maidana vs. Aydin possible for 2013; Rees & Barker added to Purdy-Jones cardBy Allan Fox: A welterweight clash between #2 WBA Marcos Maidana (32-3, 29 KO’s) and #3 WBC Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s) is being talked about for early 2013, according to RingTV. Both Aydin and Maidana have open schedules as of right now, and it would make for an appealing fight for HBO due their exciting fighting styles.

Aydin, 29, lost his last fight to Robert Guerrero last July by a 12 round decision on HBO. Despite losing the fight, Aydin made it an interesting fight to watch due to his hard power shots that he kept hitting Guerrero with. However, in the end, Aydin didn’t have the boxing skills to pull off a win and ended up losing the fight.

Maidana recently defeated Jesus Soto Karass by an 8th round TKO last month in an exciting toe-to-toe war. Just when it looked like the bigger Soto Karass had the fight under control, Maidana came storming back in the 7th round to hurt Soto-Karass with a series of big power shots. In the 8th, Maidana finished off Karass against the ropes with a storm of hard shots.

Maidana has the potential to be a world champion at welterweight. I’m not sure you can say the same thing about Aydin. He’s a little more limited than Maidana, and doesn’t hit quite as hard as him. However, this should be an interesting fight while it lasts.

Gavin Rees and Darren Barker back in action on Purdy-Jones undercard on December 8th

Lightweight Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) and middleweight Darren Barker (23-1, 14 KO’s) have reportedly been added to the December 8th undercard of the Lee Purdy vs. Carson Jones fight at the Alexandra Palace, Muswell Hill, London, United Kingdom.

Matchroom Sport is still looking for opponents to face Barker and Rees, so hopefully they can find some quality fighters for them to face.

Purdy (19-3-1, 12 KO’s), IBF International welterweight champion, has a tough bout against welterweight contender Carson Jones (34-9-2, 24 KO’s). You got to figure that Jones should win this fight based on his better experience, superior power and from the way he fought Kell Brook last July in losing by a close 12 round majority decision. Purdy isn’t on that level and we’ll likely see that in this fight once the 26-year-old Jones gets warmed up.

Barker hasn’t fought since losing by an 11th round TKO last year in October against WBC middleweight Diamond champion Sergio Martinez. Barker was hoping to fight after that but he suffered an injury that has kept him out of the ring.
