Broner wants Ricky Burns after he takes care of DeMarco

Image: Broner wants Ricky Burns after he takes care of DeMarcoBy Scott Gilfoid: Before Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) moves up in weight to light welterweight to look for bigger fights, he’s going to be looking to snatch WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ strap as soon as the 23-year-old Broner defeats WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (28-2-1, 21 KO’s) next month on November 17th at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Broner’s trainer Mike Stafford said to Bleacherreport.com “We’ll go to Ricky Burns and get that other title. He’ll [Adrien Broner] be too fast, too smart and he’s [Burns] not strong enough, these guys are too slow for Adrien.”

Burns will be a step down for Broner after he takes care of DeMarco next month, because Burns doesn’t have the power that DeMarco has, and is a lot more vulnerable.

Stafford and Broner need to move on if they have problems getting the Burns fight because I don’t see Burns fighting Broner, even though he’s talked about being interested in that fight. I suspect that Burns will be put in with another UK fighter, someone like Gavin Rees or Scott Harrison after Burns defeats British lightweight Liam Walsh (13-0, 10 KO’s) in their mismatch on December 15th at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, in London, United Kingdom. I bet there will be talk of Burns wanting to slip one last fight in between, but it’ll be something that goes on and on and on to the point where Broner will simply be wasting his time by trying to get that fight.

My advice is for Broner to make a token effort to get the Burns fight after Broner destroys DeMarco. If he sees Burns dragging his feet then Broner needs to try and briefly get the winner of the Mercito Gesta vs. Miguel Vazquez and then move up in weight when he finds out that fight can’t happen either. Gesta is a Top Rank fighter, while Broner fights for Golden Boy. This means that if Gesta beats Vazquez on December 8th on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 4, then we probably will never see a Gesta vs. Broner fight, not that anyone really cares about a fight like that. If I was Broner’s promoter I wouldn’t bother wasting time with that fight. There’s too many big fight opportunities for Broner at 140 for him to be wasting his career on trying to fight the likes of Gesta or Vazquez to pick up a paper title.
