Image: Sergio Martinez getting knocked down by Chavez Jr. will earn him a big money rematchBy Allan Fox: One of the best things that came out of last Saturday night’s fight between Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) was Martinez getting knocked down in the 12th round and almost knocked out by the young 26-year-old Chavez Jr.

Martinez could end up making making over $2 million in a rematch with Chavez Jr. at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas plus additional big money on the pay per view upside. I wouldn’t be surprised if Martinez ends up with over $3 million for a rematch against Chavez Jr.

This one incident in the entire 12 round fight, which was incredibly one-sided in Martinez’s favor, has earned Martinez a rematch with Chavez Jr. and the chance to get a huge payday of perhaps $1 million.

Had Martinez fought carefully in the 12th round and not been knocked down, he simply would have won the fight by a lopsided 12 round decision and no one would be calling for a rematch between him and Chavez Jr. But by getting knocked down by Chavez Jr., it gave hope to Chavez Jr’s legion of fans, making many of them believe that he can beat Martinez in a second fight if only Chavez Jr. starts earlier with his offense.

It sounds feasible but probably not realistic given how truly one-sided the fight was when Martinez was fighting carefully. But Chavez Jr’s fans will probably believe that he can duplicate his efforts in the 12th by starting earlier.

In reality, it’s probably little more than a pipe dream for Chavez Jr’s fans because Martinez will stay on the move the entire time in a rematch, making it near impossible for Chavez Jr. to be able to plant his feet and get maximum power for his right hand and left hooks. Chavez Jr. isn’t able to fight on the move or throw power shots when he’s not set. Martinez already figured that out in studying Chavez Jr’s past fights. Last Saturday night was no exception. Chavez Jr. didn’t hurt Martinez until he stopped moving in the 12th and tried to beat Chavez Jr. in toe-to-toe action.

Martinez almost paid the ultimate price for making this mistake. But it actually helped Martinez get a bigger payday by getting hurt and making some fans believe that Chavez Jr. can improve enough to beat Martinez in the rematch.
