Image: Edwin Rodriguez destroys Escalera; Darchinyan defeats Del Valle(Picture: Edward Diller – DiBella Entertainment/Star Boxing) By Jim Dower: Unbeaten super middleweight contender Edwin Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KO’) took care of his overmatched opponent Jason Escalera (13-1-1, 12 KO’s) in stopping him in the 8th round on Saturday night on HBO at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, United States. Rodriguez, #3 WBC, #4 IBF, #8 WBA, was hammering the near helpless Escalera at will in the 8th round when referee Steve Smoger decided he’d seen enough and stepped in and halted the fight at 0:12 of the 8th.

Escalera was supposed to be competitive with the 27-year-old Rodriguez but he wasn’t at all. HBO misjudged this fight and I imagine they wish they had never agreed upon televising this mismatch because wasn’t competitive at all. Rodriguez had Escalera hurt on numerous times in the fight, and Escalera’s corner should have probably stopped the fight to save him from taking needless punishment by the 5th because he was doing little other than just taking shots in this fight.

In a must win bout, 36-year-old Vic Darchinyan (38-5-1, 27 KO’s) showed his class in breezing to an easy 10 round unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Luis Orlando Del Valle (16-1, 11 KO’s). The final judges’ scores were 99-91, 99-91 and 96-94, all for Darchinyan.

Darchinyan put on a power punching clinic in this fight, hitting the 25-year-old Del Valle with pretty much everything but the kitchen sink but wasn’t able to stop the tough Puerto Rican now matter how hard he tried.

With a power advantage, Darchinyan punished Del Valle with left hands to the head, as he loaded up with big power shots and unleashed them. It was as one-sided as a fight could be. Del Valle did hurt Darchinyan in the 9th, but that was about the only brief moment of success for Del Valle in the fight. Darchinhyan finished strong by landing a lot of hard shots in the 10th round.
