This is a big, big test for the 26-year-old Mares, as the 27-year-old Moreno is a highly skilled southpaw fighter known for his defensive skills as well as his good counter punching ability. He’s not the inside fighter that Mares is, but he’s capable of fighting well on the outside. This is a going to be a really tough fight for Mares because Moreno is completely different from the guys that Mares has been fighting up to this point. Mares has beaten guys like Vic Darchinyan, Eric Morel, and Joseph Agbeko.

None of those fighters are anything like Moreno, and they were guys that had styles that were good for Mares’ style of fighting. Moreno is more of the opposition. He doesn’t stand and let guys crowd him to fight an inside war. Moreno moves around the ring, uses his reach and throws shots from all kinds of angles. He’s like a matador fighting little bulls at bantamweight. Whether he can control Mares at super bantamweight is another question.

On the undercard of the Mares-Moreno fight will be unbeaten IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (21-0-1, 12 KO’s) fighting a still to be determined opponent. Santa Cruz is coming off an impressive 5th round knockout win over Erik Morel earlier this month on September 15th.

Junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo (20-2, 17 KO’s) will be fighting Raul Casarez (19-2, 9 KO’s) in a scheduled 12 round bout. Angulo, 30, is looking to get an easy win, as he’s coming off of a 6th round TKO loss to James Kirkland last November in a fight where Angulo fell apart after scoring a 1st round knockdown of Kirkland. Angulo wasn’t able to keep up the pace and took a beating from Kirkland.

In heavyweight action contender Chris Arreola (35-2, 30 KO’s) is also fighting an opponent still to be determined. Arreola has been busy of late wiping out easy 3rd tier opposition and padding his resume with wins. He’s ranked highly by the sanctioning bodies and could find himself fighting for the WBC heavyweight title again in the near future if he can keep winning. Arreola had a chance against WBC champion Vitali Klitschko in 2009 but was stopped in the 10th round.
