Image: Lee Purdy to fight Carson Jones on December 8th or 15thBy Scott Gilfoid: In a laughable mismatch, Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is saying that Lee Purdy (19-3-1, 12 KO’s) will be facing #7 IBF welterweight contender Carson Jones (34-9-2, 24 KO’s) in December some time in a venue still to be determined. The fight will likely take place on December 8th or 15th, and obviously in the UK.

It’s basically a fight between domestic level fighter in the 25-year-old Purdy going up against a world class guy in Jones. Nothing good can come of this fight for Purdy unless we get some odd scoring where Jones loses despite dominating.

Jones, 26, is coming off of a controversial 12 round majority decision loss to British fighter Kell Brook last July at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. I thought scoring of the fight was absolutely horrible and NO WAY do I feel that Brook deserved the win. I mean, I’m not surprised he got the victory because the fight took place after in the UK and he was the home fighter, but he got the stuffing beaten out of him in the last six rounds of that fight by Jones. Brook was staggering around like a drunk in the 12th round and was on the verge of being stopped by Jones. In the last 15 seconds of the fight, with Brooking staggering about the ring, the referee stopped the action to give Jones a long warning. Had the referee not halted the action at that moment, I feel that Brook would have been knocked out cold by Jones.

I see it as kind of downer for Carson Jones to have to fight a lesser guy like Purdy instead of a world class contender. I guess they’re paying Jones well to come all the way over to the UK to take the fight, but I just hope the judges scores a little better than they were for the Brook-Jones fight. If I’m Jones, I’d be looking to KO Purdy to make sure that I get out of the UK with a win.

Purdy is average fighter with zero power and not much defense. He’s been beaten already by Denton Vassell and Colin Lynes, two fighters that Carson Jones would likely make easy work with. Some of Purdy’s British fans have been frothing at the mouth about Purdy’s 4th round TKO win over a BADLY inexperienced and unproven Gumersindo Lucas Carrasco earlier this month on September 8th, but that wasn’t special at all because Carrasco had never beaten anyone that you could even come close to calling good. He had a lot of fights against guys with records like 9-7, 7-17, 9-11, 4-11, and 2-6. It’s not surprising then that Purdy was able to stop this guys because he’d never been really tested before and his previous opposition was horrible.

Purdy doesn’t have the power to stand in there with a hard hitting talent like Carson Jones, and I see him running to try and save his hide in this fight. If Purdy tries to get heroic and fight Jones toe-to-toe like Kell Brook attempted to do, then Purdy’s face is going to get messed up and he’ll get knocked out.
