Image: Kell Brook needs to shine against Hector SaldiviaBy William Mackay: Having made an excuse in his last fight in barely beating Carson Jones by a 12 round majority decision last July, unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (28-0, 18 KO’s) can’t come up with anymore predictable excuses for another poor performance when he meets Hector Saldivia (41-2, 32 KO’s) next month on October 20th in their IBF welterweight title eliminator match at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK.

Brook, 26, and his promoter Eddie Hearn, blamed Brook’s poor performance in the Jones fight on Brook not having had the proper conditioning going into that fight. He’s since got the right training team behind him and is both training hard and eating right to get into the best possible condition for the Saldivia fight.

However, Brook’s performance, or lack thereof, may have simply been a case of him being unable to handle pressure and hard shots. Jones studied Brook’s previous fights and noted that most of the weak opposition that his promoters had been feeding to him since he turned pro never really put any pressure on him.

They didn’t have power and they made things easy for Brook by either running or standing in one place so that he could take the fight to them. But what Jones did was reverse the roles by putting heavy pressure on Brook and this in turn wore him down quickly to the point where Jones was dominating Brook in the last six rounds of the fight.

Brook will probably win this fight because Salivia is nothing special with his inflated ranking, but it won’t mean much if Brook doesn’t win the fight in an impressive fashion. Brook needs to show that he belongs fighting for a title, because his last fight against Jones showed that Brook doesn’t deserve to be sitting in the same arena as a champion like Randall Bailey.
