Image: Golovkin looks good enough to beat Chavez JrBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) showed that he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in the middleweight division in destroying #3 WBA Grzegorz Proksa (28-2, 21 KO’s) in only five rounds last Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York.

Before the fight was finally halted in the 5th, Golovkin had knocked down the usually steel-chinned Proksa three times in the fight.

The victory showed that Golovkin is ready to take on the best in the middleweight division, such as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sergio Martinez. In fact, that’s Golovkin’s goal right now, to face the winner of the September 15th fight between Chavez Jr. and Martinez.

Based on what I saw of Golovkin last night I’d have to favor him over the 26-year-old Chavez Jr. right now. I know Chavez Jr. would probably come into the fight with a huge weight advantage of around 20 pounds, but that wouldn’t be enough for him to beat the harder punching Golovkin, who is quicker, more accurate and a much dangerous body puncher on the inside. Body punching is supposed to be Chavez Jr’s specialty but after watching Golovkin badly hurt Proksa each time he went to the body last night, I don’t think Chavez Jr would do well on the inside against Golovkin. There’s too much body for Chavez Jr. for Golovkin to work on, and it would be too easy for him.

Chavez Jr reminds me a lot of junior middleweight Jonathan Gonzalez, who stunk up the joint last night in his 12 round draw against Sergiy Dzinziruk. Gonzalez came into the fight, which was supposed to be a junior middleweight bout at 154, looking like a light heavyweight.

The size helped Gonzalez early on but the 36-year-old Dzinziruk took over the fight in the 2nd half and was able to get a draw out of it. Golovkin is a much better offensive fighter than Dzinziruk and he wouldn’t be giving Chavez Jr. a draw. He’d be knocking him out, and that’s what I believe will happen if the two fighters end up facing each other later on in the year.
