Froch: I know I can beat Andre Ward

Image: Froch: I know I can beat Andre WardBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) hasn’t even beaten his November 17th opponent Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) and already Froch is looking past him towards the guy that schooled him last December in the Super Six tournament, the talented WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s). Froch wants a rematch with the 28-year-old Ward and feels he can beat him this time.

Froch said to Thisisnottingham.co.uk “I know I can beat him [Ward]. I lost a close points decision, 115-113 two of the judges had it. That is one round behind a draw. I am the closest man to nearly beat him and I was off my game…I would love to beat Ward and set the record straight, of course, I would.”

For some reason Froch fails to point out what the third judge scored the Ward-Froch fight by giving Ward the decision by an 118-110 score, which was more like what actually happened in the fight. The fight wasn’t close at all, believe me.

I think Froch’s win over former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute might have done something to Froch’s perception of reality because he’s not seeing his past fight with Ward clearly. Froch got TOTALLY dominated by Ward in that fight, and the fact that two judges scored it 115-113 is a sad testament to how fights are scored nowadays. That was some god awful scoring. I had Ward winning the Froch fight by an easy 10 rounds to 2 score, and that was with Ward fighting with a fractured left hand the entire fight. Just imagine how easily Ward would have beaten Froch if he were fighting with two good hands.

It’s interesting that Froch is bringing up Ward’s name now when Froch is scheduled to fight on November 17th against Yusaf Mack in Nottingham, and then following that Froch has a rematch against Bute in May of next year. Froch is then going to be likely fighting a rematch against Mikkel Kessler. It’s easy to talk about Ward now when there’s no chance of fighting him anytime soon. I just wonder if Froch would be making the same comments if he had a clear plate and no one available except for Ward or Andre Dirrell to fight?

I don’t see Froch ever fighting Ward or Dirrell again. There’s talk of Froch retiring after he fights three more fights, and that means he could hang up his gloves after fighting Mack, Bute and Kessler. Boxing fans would get to see how Froch would do against Ward in a rematch because Froch will have retired.
