Image: Deontay Wilder targeting Bryant JenningsBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) is still having problems finding top quality fighters that are interested in facing him. One fighter that the 6’7″ Wilder would love to get in the ring is unbeaten Bryant Jennings (15-0, 7 KO’s), who Wilder feels he could really take apart no problem if Jennings’ team would agree to let him fight the talented Wilder.

Wilder told Worldwideweeklyboxingpredictionsleague.co.uk “For that Jennings guy, I’m glad he takes me as a joke, but it’s hard to laugh once your jaw gets broke. I would love to see a contract come my way. I would take it in a split second and give him a reality check…That would be quick work for me.”

The 28-year-old Jennings, 6’2″, has incredibly long arms, good power and decent boxing skills. He totally dominated Sergey Liakhovich by a 9th round stoppage in March of this year. He’s been opening a lot of eyes with his performances, and I’d have to say that he’s further along in his progression than Wilder is. However, I think he’d be just another statistic for Wilder if they let that fight happen. Jennings is easy to hit, and Wilder would have a very good chance of knocking him out in one or two rounds due to Jennings habit of coming right at his opponents. If he fought that way against Wilder, he’d walk straight into a right hand or a left hook and that would be it.

It would be a good fight, though. Wilder needs someone Jennings to catch the attention of boxing fans. Wilder already tried calling out unbeaten British heavyweight Tyson Fury but he’s not been able to get him to take the bait and make the fight happen. Fury would probably end up in the same boat as Jennings if he chose to fight Wilder. He’d get hit with too many right hands from Wilder early on and would hit the deck. Once Fury got back up, Wilder would likely poleaxe him with a right hand and that would be that.

Wilder says he wants to fight for a world title next year by the summer. He needs to speed up the pace of his fights and the quality of his competition because he’s not going to get ranked high enough before next summer unless he can get guys like Jennings and Fury to fight him so that he can start taking important scalps.

What Wilder’s problem is he looks too good and few fighters want to step in and fight a guy with his kind of power. He’s one of those fighters that can make a mistake and still knock you out. He can look bad for two or three rounds, and then knock your lights out. That makes him dangerous fight because the margin of error is so small when fighting someone like him.

Jennings would be perfect for Wilder because he’s got some power, and he has the reach to test Wilder for as long as the fight lasts. I doubt that Jennings will accept the fight and I don’t blame if he does choose to ignore Wilder.
