Image: Bellew sees Hatton-Khan fight getting madeBy William Mackay: British light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew feels that Ricky Hatton can accomplish some big things in his possible November 24th comeback in Manchester, England. While few boxing fans see the 33-year-old Haton finding success at the world level, Bellew thinks Hatton can surprise some people by fighting at a high level.

Bellew said to Talkboxing.com “He’s been a great fighter and was a fantastic champion…A fully fit Ricky Hatton would do some serious damage on the world stage…They say they’re [Amir Khan and Hatton] friends, but when the pound [money] signs are shown and they start talking, it happens. It makes financial sense.”

I believe Hatton would take a fight with Khan right about now if that’s the best fight he can get. However, I think Hatton might be looking more towards a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. than a fight against Khan, who has lost his last two fights. A Mayweather-Hatton fight would being in a lot more money than a fight between Hatton and a struggling Khan. If Khan was still fighting at a high level then it would be possible.

Don’t look for Hatton to face anyone good for a while, though, because he hasn’t fought for three years since 2009 and he’s not going to make the mistake of fighting a quality fighter in his first fight. The risk of getting knocked out cold would be too high for Hatton. He can make a ton of money just fighting lower level opposition for the next year. The British boxing public will eat up his fights no matter who he faces, and Hatton can then further pad his retirement with those funds of use the money to try and help his promotional company.

Getting a TV deal with Sky for his promotional company would be a huge benefit from a comeback like this, although I don’t see that happening unless Hatton finds huge success. I doubt he will, because Hatton looked pretty shot in his fights against Mayweather and Pacquiao.
