When will Deontay Wilder step up?

Image: When will Deontay Wilder step up?By Steven Ocallaghan: A lot of talk, especially on this site is made about unbeaten heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (24-0, 24 KO’s), the undefeated American heavyweight boxer. A mid-20s fighter with 24 or so fights with 100% KO record. On the outside it looks as if we have a real prospect, but on the inside I’m far from impressed.

Kerston Manswell, Owen Beck, Jesse Oltmanns, Marlon Hayes. Can these names really be taken seriously if we are to believe he is the next big thing. Manswell has lost 6 of his last 8 fights. Beck has lost his last 8′ Oltmanns has lost 4 of his last six and Hayes has lost 9 from 10.

If Wilder is to be taken seriously he has to now fight a guy in the top 20, even top 30 as all before aren’t exactly household names. Tyson Fury in Britain takes a lot of flack about the lack of big fights but he did fight and beat Dereck Chisora who is still a top 15 guy so that argument doesn’t stack up. Let Wilder fight a Chisora or a Robert Helenius or even Fury then we might be able to judge, but as for now if he keeps on the road he is on, the big fights will eventually pass him by
